Whitworth Skyline Walk 2023

Spodden Valley Revealed are once again participating in the annual Skyline Walk – collaborating with local experts, volunteers and artists to create 12 audio points along the 14 mile walk, which takes place on Sunday 14 May 2023.

The audio points will describe highlights of the Valley’s heritage – linked to visual references in the landscape. Some may be familiar, and some, hopefully, new to you. Your audio guide is Doctor Whitworth, a man of many stories and amazing facts. Did you know for instance that Whitworth was once on the Equator?

We strongly recommend that you download the audio in advance to ensure that you can listen to all the tracks as you do the walk, even if you’re in areas where the signal is weak or disappears!

Skyline Audio Beacons

As part of Spodden Valley Revealed, Mid Pennine Arts worked with the organisers of the Whitworth Skyline Walk, Whitworth Heritage Museum, artists and local experts, to create an audio collection, telling the story of the landscape.

The stories are told by Dr Whitworth – who narrates the ancient heritage of the Valley from pre-history through to the unique stories of sites such as the Cotton Famine Road.

On the day of the Whitworth Skyline Walk (you can find out about the 2023 walk on the Whitworth TC website HERE), there will be 12 flags across the route, designed by artist, Wendy Meadley.  The flags are a prompt to listen to the corresponding audio file.

You can also download a helpful and beautifully illustrated map* designed by artist, Cath Ford.  This indicates the audio flag locations as well as illustrating some of the stories you will hear.

Download the anti-clockwise (Eastern) route map HERE. Download the clockwise route (Western) map HERE.

(*Please note that if you go on the walk on your own there is no right of way through Greenbrow Farm (point 6 or 7 dependent on direction walked). The farmer gives special permission for the Skyline Walk event only. Instead at this point you should follow the public right of way on the hillside to your right.)

Skyline Walk Audio

The audio files are hosted by SoundCloud, you can listen online, click on the link below:

Whitworth Skyline Walk – Anti-clockwise (Eastern) route

Whitworth Skyline Walk – Clockwise (Western) route

However,  we suggest that prior to the walk you download the audio files onto your phone or device to ensure that you can listen to them, even if you can’t get a signal or wifi!  There’s more information about downloading below.

As you walk the route you simply need to play the track when you reach the corresponding numbered flag on the route.  Track One and Flag One, and so on.

Grateful thanks to The Whitworth Veterans Band for allowing us to use their music on the audio.

Downloading the Audio

SoundCloud is free to use, however you can only listen to audio online, which is reliant on the quality of reception.   If you sign up for a paid SoundCloud Go account, you can also download tracks to listen off line within the app.  SoundCloud offers a free 7 day trial for this account,  and accounts can be cancelled at anytime.  You can find all the details about SoundCloud accounts here*.  This page also has links to the SoundCloud Apps for Apple and Android phones.

We have also loaded the files onto Clyp, and these can be downloaded for free, although we have found that the quality is not as good as SoundCloud.  Click here for the audio. (Eastern skyline comes first on Clyp, scroll down for Western skyline.)

If you need further information on how to download sound files to your device, you might find these links useful*:  Apple Products   Android Phones

*MPA has provided these links in the hope that the information on the websites is useful. MPA has no control over, and is not responsible for, the content of these sites.

General

No doubt you’ll have lots to carry for a 14 mile walk, but do make sure not to forget your audio device and your headphones!

We know how engaging Dr Whitworth can be, so do please be careful and remain aware of your surroundings and footings whilst listening to the audio.   Mid Pennine Arts will not be responsible for any accident or injury that may occur whilst listening to the audio files.

For the benefit of other walkers, please wear headphones to listen to the audio.

You can also find out more about the project on our website.

There is more information about the walk here.

Have a great time!

Whitworth Skyline Walk 2019

The audio points will describe highlights of the Valley’s heritage – linked to visual references in the landscape. Some may be familiar, and some, hopefully, new to you. Your audio guide is Doctor Whitworth, a man of many stories and amazing facts. Did you know for instance that Whitworth was once on the Equator?

Information About the Skyline Walk

The Skyline Walk is a challenging walk of approximately 14 miles over varied terrain, starting at Lobden Golf Club between 8am and 9am – your choice.  It is undertaken entirely at the walker’s own risk.  The organisers – Whitworth Sports Council – will provide you with written route instructions and orange juice/water/plasters if required at every checkpoint. Building walls, community and skills…

A snapshot of what’s been happening as part of Spodden Valley Revealed recently:

Drystone Walling…

We joined forces with Analogue Farm for 10 days of drystone wall training for local volunteers with master craftsman, Alan Rhodes.   20 participants were able to develop this ancient skill, understand more about the material, and the landscape the walls inhabit. They join a growing group of volunteers with skills to help preserve this heritage landscape and the future Spodden Valley Revealed ecomuseum.

Feedback from participants was terrific:

‘Fantastic to be in nature and surrounded by spectacular scenery. I find it inspiring!’

‘As a newcomer to the area I am already gaining a whole appreciation of the culture and heritage of the area.’

‘I absolutely loved it. After years of wanting to do a course in dry stone walling it was amazing to be able to do it and learn the skill.’

‘Good opportunities to work together towards a common goal.’

Interested in developing similar skills or simply interested in knowing more about Spodden Valley Revealed? Please email Faye.

Rushcart…

The Spodden Valley Explorers set a challenge at Rushcart 2018.   Held at the beginning of September, Rushcart is a well attended event, with around a thousand people attending. At its centre is a decorated cart, showcasing an impressive structure of heather, the cart is accompanied by local dance groups leading the procession to a final celebration at The Riverside.  Our SVR Senior Explorers joined the fun with a new challenge for 2018 which encouraged budding Explorers to look at the tradition of the Rushcart closer, finding answers to clues in order to achieve membership of the Explorers Club and to earn their own special membership badge. We were also delighted to host the marvellous Dr Whitworth who regaled his captivated audiences with exciting tales of Spodden Valley, all eager to hear more of the ghostly tales and valley adventures.  Look out for us at Rushcart 2019!

Stories of Spodden Valley Revealed – How to research and tell them…

The first of three free sessions hosted at Whitworth Museum saw volunteers invited to become researchers of local history for SVR.  It featured inspirational talks on the unique story of the Cotton Famine Road and the Munitions Factory at Healey Dell.  In the next session, the group will explore behind the scenes of the Museum’s collection, and learn how to use the catalogue system to further their investigations and tell those stories in new and engaging ways.

If you are interested in taking part in future sessions, please contact Faye for more information.

Never Lost, Just Exploring!

Bikes and Bands take over Britannia…

bike and band

On Saturday 7th July we put on our many Explorer hats to celebrate the launch of the newly renovated Britannia Greenway, (part of the emerging Valley of Stone Greenway), encouraging people to come and join in and see what an amazing place there is to explore on their doorstep.  Whether it’s cycling or walking, horse-riding or running that you enjoy, the Britannia Greenway is a great place for you to start! The celebration event was a fabulous day, with Whitworth and Healey Brass Band as well as contemporary brass ensemble, Loud Noises creating a jolly atmosphere, whilst lots of new budding Explorers joined in creating decorations for their scooter, bike and pram wheels and taking part in an expedition on the Greenway… there was even a Pineapple Car!

Pineapple Car - C Ford

pebblesOn the day a number of decorative rocks were hidden along the Greenway waiting to be discovered. Do you think you could be the next Explorer to find one? Why not put your Explorer hat on and have a fun day cycling, walking, running or horse-riding along the Britannia Greenway to find out!

As Explorers ourselves we were on the hunt for new recruits, encouraging everybody to get out and see, hear, feel and smell the things that are around them. It was thrilling to see so many people, of all ages, excited to discover their Explorer name and be welcomed into the Explorer Club with a special badge. We hope that our fellow Explorers have continued to proceed with curiosity and remember we are never lost, just exploring!

If you have a spare day between Tuesday 1st – Sunday 6th May 2018, why not join us for a FREE Dig Day and help us solve an age-old mystery on Brown Wardle Hill.

Following on from our hugely popular Spot The Hunter Gatherers week, DigVentures and Mid Pennine Arts are back with another FREE archaeology event for Lancashire history-lovers!

This time, our mission is to solve the age-old mystery of Brown Wardle Farm – a ruined settlement high up on Brown Wardle Hill.

Was it a hamlet, a village or a farm? How many people lived there? When was it built? Why was it abandoned? And did it really get blown up as some sources say?

We’ve heard some pretty interesting stories about the ruins up on Brown Wardle Hill, and our mission now is to find the facts and determine the truth by running an archaeological excavation that you can join in with.

Always wanted to try archaeology? This is your chance!

Click here to sign up and join our dig team. Think of it as a history adventure, where you get to spend the day investigating the past – hands-on!

DigVentures will show you all the skills you need to excavate alongside their archaeologists and help solve the mystery on Brown Wardle Hill.

How do I sign up?

Easy! Sign up in the next 10 days to grab a place on our dig team. You can join us for just one day, or the whole week – it’s up to you!

Whitworth Skyline Walk 2018

Spodden Valley Revealed are participating in the annual Skyline Walk in 2018 – collaborating with local experts, volunteers and artists to create 11 audio points along the 14 mile walk, which takes place on 13 May 2018.

You can find all the relevant links and details here.  We strongly recommend that you download the audio in advance to ensure that you can listen to all the tracks as you do the walk, even if you’re in areas where the signal is weak or disappears!

Vehicles may be available to remove you from the moor in the case of emergency.  There will also be a certificate and a hot meal available to you at the finish at Lobden Golf Club.  There is an option to complete a shorter walk instead of the full Skyline, details are available on the entry form.

The Skyline Walk organisers have the following advice to make sure you have the best experience possible:

*It is the walker’s responsibility to wear appropriate clothing and carry appropriate kit. We suggest walking boots – though strong, properly tied, trainers will do if the weather is dry and has been for a while; spare socks; waterproofs, at least to carry, unless the day of the walk is guaranteed to be entirely dry and at least one layer of clothing more than you expect, because it is nearly always cooler on the tops.  A phone (if you’re using a different audio device) would be handy too, some plasters and (optimistically) sun-cream.  14 miles will probably take between 5 and 8 hours to walk, so we suggest you bring a packed lunch/something to eat.

*There are 4 intermediate checkpoints spaced throughout the walk and the direction of travel varies from year to year.  All walkers MUST check in at each checkpoint, and if you should drop out at any of these intermediate checkpoints you MUST tell the marshal there and hand in your numbered tag.  Please do not drop out at any other point.  Two checkpoints are vehicle-accessible.

*We regret to say that we cannot have dogs on the walk. We cannot differentiate between the well-trained and any others: it is the lambing season, and there are stiles.  We have concerns about dogs as hazards, dogs en masse, and dogs as a nuisance to non-dog walkers.  And how much fun would 14 miles on a short lead be?  So, no dogs, and no exceptions. And please, no skyline walkers being accompanied by non-skyline dog walkers!

*Although there is some car parking space at or near the golf club this will fill up quite rapidly if, as we hope, lots of people walk.  If possible can you car-share up to Lobden, or get yourself dropped off/picked up later, or even walk up?  (Think of it as a warm-up.)

Entry fee – £3 up to the Wednesday before, £5 after that (this goes to the Skyline Walk organisers, not MPA)

Any queries phone the walk organisers Jo Furtado (01706 853442 or 07813180748) or David Chorlton (01706 853234). Entry forms (stapled to the information sheet) are available from various shops around Whitworth, the main two outlets being UBS (David’s plumbers merchant shop) and the Leisure Centre (Baths).   The form has details of where to return it with the entry fee.  The form is also available online.
